The youth wing of the Tipra Motha party Saturday called for a shutdown of all government offices in Gomati district on June 2, in protest against the alleged refusal of District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma to meet Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma at his official residence earlier this week.
“As we have announced to go on a strike earlier if the state government doesn’t take any action in this regard, we are going for a shutdown of all offices in Gomati district on June 2. If no assurance is given to us after that, our strike may extend to other districts as well in the coming days,” said Suraj Debbarma, President, Youth Tipra Federation.
When reminded of the chief minister’s assurance of taking steps regarding the issue, Suraj Debbarma said, “The DM (of Gomati) refused to meet him (Pradyot Kishore) and even didn’t respond to his calls. We gave four days’ time (from May 26), but the government is not doing anything. We can’t sit silent.”
A delegation of Tipra Motha leaders had earlier met the chief minister to discuss the issue.
After the said meeting, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha remarked, “I was in Delhi when the Tipra Motha founder called me and apprised me of this incident. He told me it wasn’t a complaint and he was simply informing me… I spoke with the chief secretary on the day I returned to the state and asked him to inform me about the details of what actually happened… There might have been a communication gap. Such incidents should not happen. If it really occurred, we shall try to resolve this and ensure a cordial environment in all places.”
Tripura Opposition leader and CPI(M) politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury termed the episode “unacceptable” and said in a social media post, “DM Gomati’s behaviour with two public representatives is not at all acceptable and condemnable. Dereliction of duties as a public servant and sheer arrogance.”
The Congress also criticised the actions of the Gomati district magistrate. “Pradyot Kishore and others went to meet Gomati DM. They weren’t even extended the courtesy to sit, and a security guard on duty informed them that the DM wouldn’t meet them. This is a highly undue act. Political representatives often have to meet the DM since he runs the district administration… A DM must have the mentality to receive telephone calls or meet – anyone can go and meet him, be it ministers, MLAs, or common people. But the way Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma was turned back is highly undue…” Congress MLA Birajit Sinha earlier said.
