Launching a blistering attack against the ruling NDA government, DMK MLA R Siva criticised the decision to drop French as the third language from the school curriculum in the Union Territory of Puducherry. The 58-year-old politician, who represents the Villianur constituency in the Union Territory of Puducherry, said that the decision has agitated a vast section of people, as Puducherry and France share a cultural connection.

“The circular to make changes within seven days has sent shockwaves,” said the veteran MLA. Further, he mentioned that many across the territory are learning French and working in various parts of the world, and hence, the decision will affect them directly.

Referring to the French agreement, the politician further mentioned that the French is expected to continue in Puducherry as long as people want. Since the people have good communication with France, the decision will affect their linguistic interests.

He further urged the government to recall the decision.

Starting with the 2026–27 academic session, the CBSE will implement a significant curricular overhaul that phases out popular foreign languages like French and German as third-language electives from Class 6. Under this new framework, these international options will be replaced by Sanskrit and various regional Indian languages, marking a strategic pivot toward prioritising indigenous linguistic studies in middle school.

As a result, the schools in Puducherry will see the removal of French as the additional language option.
