The season-opening leg of the Diamond League in Doha has been postponed, with organisers confirming a new date of June 19.

The meet, originally slated for May 8, was pushed back due to the evolving situation in West Asia.

Safety First

In an official statement, organisers stressed that the decision was taken after closely monitoring developments in the region alongside local authorities and stakeholders.

“In the interests of athletes and spectators’ safety, a decision has now been taken to postpone the meeting. Should conditions allow, it will now be held on June 19," the release said.

The event will also shift venues — from Qatar Sports Club to the Khalifa International Stadium — a temperature-controlled arena that previously hosted the 2019 World Athletics Championships.

Conditions and Calendar Shift

The move comes with a trade-off. While June in Doha typically brings higher temperatures, the stadium’s cooling technology ensures safe competition conditions.

The revised scheduling also places the Doha leg between the Bislett Games in Oslo (June 10) and the Meeting de Paris (June 28), making it the eighth stop of the 2026 calendar.

The Doha meet holds special significance for Neeraj Chopra, who crossed the 90m mark at this venue last season.

A Global Athletics Showcase

The Diamond League, featuring 15 elite one-day meets across 13 countries, remains the pinnacle of track and field competition.

Athletes compete across 32 disciplines, earning points through 14 series events to qualify for the grand finale in Brussels on September 4–5.

Despite the disruption, organisers reiterated their commitment to delivering “the highest level of safe and secure competition" as the global athletics season gets underway.
