US President Donald Trump’s picture will soon feature in a limited-edition American passport, marking a departure from long-standing norms, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The State Department said the special passports are being introduced to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence this July. According to reports by Fox News and The Bulwark, the design includes Trump’s official photograph superimposed over the Declaration, along with his signature in gold. Another image features a historic painting of the Founding Fathers.

“As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed US passports to commemorate this historic occasion," State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said on X, linking to the Fox News piece.

A State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Trump-themed passports will be available only in Washington, “for as long as there is availability," and will not cost extra.

It remains unclear whether applicants can opt out of receiving the commemorative version.

Such a move has few parallels in modern democracies, where passports typically showcase historical or cultural imagery rather than current political leaders. Existing US passports feature scenes such as the Moon landing and landmarks including the Statue of Liberty.

Since returning to office last year, Trump has increasingly placed his name and image on government-linked institutions. Banners featuring the president have appeared on several federal buildings in Washington, while his name has been added to institutions such as the Kennedy Center and the dismantled US Institute of Peace.

Last month, the Treasury Department also announced that Trump’s signature would begin appearing on US currency, another unprecedented step.

In contrast, countries like Britain display the image of King Charles III on their currency, a ceremonial head of state with no direct political role. The king met Trump in Washington on Tuesday during a state visit.
