Beijing confirmed on Monday that President Donald Trump will undertake a state visit to China from May 13 to 15, where he is expected to hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on key global and bilateral issues, including Iran and trade. The visit comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and efforts by both countries to manage complex economic ties.

“At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, President of the United States of America Donald J. Trump will pay a state visit to China from May 13 to 15," a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said.

Further details of the agenda have not been officially disclosed.

Senior Chinese and US officials are set to hold talks in South Korea this week, officials from both sides said on Sunday, ahead of an expected summit between President Xi Jinping and President Trump.

China’s commerce ministry said Vice Premier He Lifeng will attend consultations on “mutual economic and trade issues" in Seoul on Tuesday and Wednesday, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed he will meet He before travelling to Beijing for the leaders’ summit.

The discussions come as Washington and Beijing seek to ease tensions over trade and broader strategic issues, including Taiwan, with the Middle East conflict adding to global uncertainty. The talks are expected to help finalise key announcements for the Trump-Xi meeting.

Bessent also said he would hold meetings in Tokyo on Tuesday with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, adding that economic security remains central to advancing President Trump’s “America First Economic Agenda."
