Call it a bakery special, no one saw coming — because Berrettini’s Boulangerie was open!

Matteo Berrettini produced a jaw-dropping performance at the Monte Carlo Masters, serving up Daniil Medvedev a brutal 6-0, 6-0 defeat — a hot and fresh ‘double bagel’ the Russian had never tasted before in his career.

For a player of Medvedev’s calibre, the loss was historic, for all the wrong reasons.

A Career First And Not The Good Kind

Before Wednesday, Medvedev had never lost an ATP Tour match without winning a single game.

That changed today.

The Russian struggled from the outset, committing 23 unforced errors and failing to convert early break-point chances. From there, the match spiralled quickly and decisively out of his control.

Medvedev’s long-standing discomfort on clay courts only added to the narrative.

The surface has never suited his game, but even by those standards, this was a catastrophic collapse of unprecedented levels.

Frustration Boils Over

As the match slipped away, so did Medvedev’s composure — in typical fashion.

Medvedev is going completely crazy, this is only the first of many!😭😭😭😭Clayvedev is back!

Midway through the second set, the Russian smashed his racket seven times against the clay before tossing it into the bin. Tidy from Danill, as always.

Despite the heavy defeat, there’s a small silver lining: Medvedev will just about remain inside the ATP top 10, having dropped just 50 ranking points in Monte Carlo.

Berrettini Joins Elite Company

While it was a nightmare for one, it was pure magic for the other.

Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist, delivered what he later called “one of the best performances of my life." And the numbers back it up.

According to OptaAce, he has now become just the fifth player in the ATP rankings era (since 1973) to beat a top-10 opponent 6-0, 6-0 — joining legends like Ivan Lendl and Roger Federer.

Berrettini, playing on a wildcard after an injury-hit spell, has now strung together 17 consecutive games at the tournament.

If this performance is anything to go by, one can count on the Italian to keep his ‘bakery’ open for a little while longer.
