In Arundi village of Nyamati taluk, a Class 10 student preparing for her SSLC examinations turned to the police after her father allegedly burned her textbooks and prevented her from attending school.
According to her complaint, the girl’s father, who is reportedly addicted to alcohol, had been creating disturbances at home. With exams just weeks away, the loss of study materials and disruption to her routine left the student distressed. Fearing further interference with her education, she called the emergency helpline 112 and later filed a formal complaint at the Nyamati police station.
Swift Police Response
Police officers Hemaraj and Ravikumar responded to the call and visited the family’s home as quickly as they could. They intervened and counselled the father, explaining the seriousness of his actions and the potential long-term impact on his daughter’s education.
Under the supervision of CPI Ravi of the Nyamati police station, officers ensured that the girl received new textbooks and notebooks to replace the ones that were burned. The police also contacted school authorities and requested their support to help the student continue her studies without further disruption.
Protecting a Child’s Right to Education
Police officials stressed that while domestic disagreements may occur, they must not interfere with a child’s right to education. Destroying study materials, especially during board exam preparations, can severely affect a student’s confidence and academic performance.
The timely intervention helped stabilise the situation and ensured the girl could resume her exam preparation. The incident has drawn attention within the village, with residents expressing concern over the episode, particularly given the importance of the SSLC examinations.
All that the girl wanted was to study for the upcoming board exams which in a way is a turning point in her life and career. A drunken father was about to kill that future and dream but right intervention of police and the girl seeking their help, turned the tables.
