To impart computer science education to students at government schools from class 1 to 10, the Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has decided to recruit around 3,000 teachers to teach the subject, which is crucial in higher education and deciding careers.

A total of 2,500 teachers will be recruited from the School Education Department and 463 teachers will be recruited to the PM Shree schools through Samagra Shikshana Karnataka (SSK). The DSEL has decided to create separate cadre for the computer science teachers, and it has already published the draft of Cadre and Recruitment (C&R) rules.

Rules amended

Speaking to The Hindu, Vikas Kishor Suralkar, Commissioner of Public Instructions, said, “The C&R rules have been amended and a draft notification issued. The recruitment notification will be issued after the final C&R is arrived at.”

The State government has already started 309 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) to provide quality education with necessary infrastructure from pre-school to class 12 under one roof. In addition, with the help of Asian Development Bank, steps have been taken to build 800 new KPS from the current academic year.

Under PM Shree schools

A total of 463 government schools are also being developed across the State under the PM Shree scheme. The computer education is mandatory for students in these schools.

Many schools now have computer labs. However, government had not yet appointed separate teachers for teaching the subject. Instead, some trained teachers who had already been appointed were teaching computer science. Since a large number of the KPS are being started this year, the Education Department has taken steps to create a separate C&R to hire the computer science teachers.
