Residents across parts of Dubai received a missile attack warning alert on their mobile phones on Friday, triggering concern among the public.
The emergency alert advised people to take necessary precautions in the event of a missile attack. However, authorities soon reassured residents that there was no immediate cause for alarm.
The UAE’s Ministry of Interior said the situation was normal. The ministry did not immediately explain why the alert had been issued.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia following recent hostilities involving Iran, although no fresh attacks have been reported on the UAE since Iran and the US signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 17 June aimed at ending the conflict.
UAE Hit Hardest In Iran-US Conflict
During the conflict, which began in February-end, the United Arab Emirates came under a series of retaliatory missile and drone attacks that left 13 people dead and 227 others injured.
Among those killed were two Emirati military personnel, one Moroccan contractor, and ten foreign nationals from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Most civilian casualties were caused by falling missile debris and shrapnel after the UAE’s air defence systems intercepted incoming projectiles over populated areas.
Although the country’s THAAD and Patriot missile defence systems successfully neutralised most of the attacks, debris from intercepted missiles caused damage in several residential neighbourhoods.
The strikes also disrupted key infrastructure and energy facilities across the UAE. A drone attack on the Ruwais Industrial Complex sparked a major fire, forcing ADNOC to temporarily suspend operations at its 922,000-barrels-per-day refinery. Separate strikes also targeted oil storage facilities at the Port of Fujairah.
The aviation sector was affected after a strike hit a fuel storage tank near Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport, causing localised fires and disrupting flight operations. In Abu Dhabi, falling interceptor debris damaged residential buildings near Zayed International Airport.
Military and diplomatic installations were also targeted during the conflict. The Al Dhafra Air Base and the US Consulate in Dubai sustained minor structural damage during waves of drone and ballistic missile attacks.
