Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the Vice President due to health reasons, and that there was no other reason behind the same.
Speaking exclusively to news agency ANI over Dhankhar’s resignation, the Home Minister also said the Vice President “did good work according to the Constitution".
“Dhankhar ji was sitting on a constitutional post, and during his tenure, he did good work according to the Constitution," Shah said.
“He has resigned due to his personal health problem. One should not try to stretch it too much and find something," he added.
Dhankhar resigned as the Vice President on July 21, citing health grounds. His sudden resignation came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, which concluded on August 21.
An election to pick his successor is scheduled to take place on September 9.
In the vice-presidential election, NDA pick CP Radhakrishnan, the Governor of Maharashtra, is pitted against opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge.
Dhankhar’s term as the Vice President was to end on August 10, 2027.
