External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to hold a meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Khalilur Rahman, today in New Delhi. Rahman, who is on a three-day visit to India, arrived in the national capital last evening, April 7.
The Bangladeshi Foreign Minister is also expected to meet National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
This marks the first visit of a Bangladeshi minister to India since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government took office in February.
The two leaders are expected to deliberate on key issues — including strengthening bilateral ties and regional challenges. The meeting comes at a crucial time when West Asia is embroiled in a wider conflict, involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
India and Bangladesh have advocated dialogue and diplomacy, calling for de-escalation and adherence to international law to end hostilities in the region.
India-Bangladesh Ties
The ties between India and Bangladesh took a hit after Muhammad Yunus-led government came to power, following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina led administration in the face of mass anti-government protests.
What followed was a massive violence against minority groups in Bangladesh, which was repeatedly condemned by New Delhi.
The two sides initiated efforts to stabilise the relations after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri represented India at the recent oath-taking ceremony of Tarique Rahman as the Prime Minister in Dhaka.
Rahman assumed the office following his party’s landslide victory in the parliamentary polls.
