Lallianzuala Chhangte tries to find a way past the Jamaica defence with a freekick at The Valley, home to Charlton Athletic, on Wed
Khalid Jamil’s message to the team in the dressing room was loud and clear: defend in numbers and ensure no goal at least for the first half an hour.It was typical of how the India coach approaches games against stronger opponents.
On many days it works, but with a weakened squad and makeshift team, it was always going to be an uphill task for the national team against Jamaica at the Unity Cup in London on Wednesday.Jamaica pounced on a defensive lapse early in the game to take the lead through Courtney Clarke, while Kaheim Dixon scored another one in the second half to coast to a comfortable 2-0 win and book a place in the final of the Unity Cup, a four-nation tournament for countries with large communities in the UK.“Since we are playing a good team, the best way to stay in the game is not to concede early,” Jamil said after the game. “Unfortunately, we conceded an early goal. You can say it was due to lack of concentration. In the second half, we were better but conceded the second (goal) when we were playing well and trying to score.”The “lack of concentration”, by Jamil’s own admission, happened in midfield when Jeakson Singh’s pass to Farukh Choudhary – slotted in midfield due to compulsion rather than choice -- went awry.
The two players were wondering who’s at fault, and before captain Rahul Bheke and Nikhil Poojary could close the gap, Clarke punished India by picking the top corner, past goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.India were largely in their own half, with little to show upfront.Underdogs against a team that narrowly missed out on FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification, India were better in the second half but did not have a shot on goal.
There were three attempts, never close though. One ‘goal’ was flagged for offside.Jamaica’s second came from a player who was playing at home. Dixon, the Charlton Athletic winger, danced past three defenders, created space for himself, before drilling a low shot through Akash Mishra’s legs and into the far bottom corner.“I am happy with the efforts of the players. In the second half, with an extra player (Rahim Ali) in attack we were better.
Everyone tried very hard, we knew we are playing a strong opponent. I think the turning point was we conceded early.”Jamil handed international debuts to PN Noufal and Ricky Shabong, while also providing minutes for Mohammad Sanan, a player who prospered under him at Jamshedpur FC. Ryan Williams hobbling off the field injured was worrying.“We have to do the scan and see (extent of injury). I think he will be fine,” said Jamil.
