Early goal upset plans against Jamaica: Jamil

Khalid Jamil’s message to the team in the dressing room was loud and clear: defend in numbers and ensure no goal at least for the first half an hour.It was typical of how the India coach approaches games against stronger opponents.

On many days it works, but with a weakened squad and makeshift team, it was always going to be an uphill task for the national team against Jamaica at the Unity Cup in London on Wednesday.Jamaica pounced on a defensive lapse early in the game to take the lead through Courtney Clarke, while Kaheim Dixon scored another one in the second half to coast to a comfortable 2-0 win and book a place in the final of the Unity Cup, a four-nation tournament for countries with large communities in the UK.“Since we are playing a good team, the best way to stay in the game is not to concede early,” Jamil said after the game. “Unfortunately, we conceded an early goal. You can say it was due to lack of concentration. In the second half, we were better but conceded the second (goal) when we were playing well and trying to score.”The “lack of concentration”, by Jamil’s own admission, happened in midfield when Jeakson Singh’s pass to Farukh Choudhary – slotted in midfield due to compulsion rather than choice -- went awry.
