Counting of votes for all 293 assembly constituencies in West Bengal is underway amid tight security arrangements. With most rounds counted, trends show a clear BJP victory in West Bengal.

Who all won seats so far? The BJP won Monteswar seat in West Bengal while the TMC retained Bhagawangola by a massive margin. In Purba Bardhaman district’s Monteswar, BJP candidate Saikat Panja defeated TMC minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury by a margin of 14,798 votes, marking a significant upset for the ruling party. In Murshidabad district’s Bhagawangola constituency, TMC’s Reyat Hossain Sarkar secured a resounding victory, defeating CPI(M) candidate Mahamudal Hasan by a margin of 56,407 votes.

Reasons behind BJP surge: With the halfway mark of 148 in the 295-member Assembly, the BJP gaining major lead could point to a possible breakthrough in the state ruled by TMC for the past 15 years, and among the five reasons behind the saffron surge, party insiders  termed the core issues of “security”, whether this was in the context of the law and order condition, to “assurance” over the Dearness Allowance and pension of state government employees or Centre-led development.

According to the Election Commission, West Bengal recorded its highest ever voter turnout this year, with an overall participation of 92.47%, the highest seen in any Assembly or Lok Sabha election in the state. Women turned out in even greater numbers at 93.24%, while male voter turnout stood at 91.74%. The results will determine which party ultimately won.
