From AI deepfakes to “Legofication" and now “gamification", the rules of modern propaganda have been rewritten in the Iran war.

After the Trump administration was slammed for a “hype reel" that spliced authentic military strike footage with animations from the video game Call of Duty, the Iranian side is now using Minesweeper – the retro-style classic 90s Microsoft puzzle game – to “tease" US President Donald Trump.

The Iranian embassy in Afghanistan’s Mazar-i-Sharif recently launched a satirical social media campaign aimed at President Trump, using Minesweeper to mock American naval presence in the Strait of Hormuz – a key energy waterway controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The video features gameplay of the iconic game overlaid onto a satellite map of the strait.

As the cursor clicks through the digital minefield, the message is clear: the Iranian authorities are reminding the United States that they possess the capability to mine Hormuz, and any attempt to control the route is as precarious as a high-stakes click in the game.

Watch the video here:

The video includes sarcastic text praising Trump’s efforts to “open" Hormuz as “commendable", while visually illustrating that a single wrong move – or “click" – results in a “game over" explosion.
