The UP government's latest guidelines are made in an effort to bring accountability to the supply chain and allow a customer to refuse an egg past its 'sell-by' date.

UP government mandates expiry date stamping on eggs from today.
From April 1, eggs sold in Uttar Pradesh will carry the expiry date on them, just like packaged medicines. The development came as the state government has made it mandatory for egg producers to stamp expiry dates on their products.
Non-compliant stock is liable to be destroyed or declared unfit, according to the government order. Unlike medicines, an expiry date on an egg has to be read as an indicator of peak freshness rather than a strict safety cutoff.
Additional Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Mukesh Meshram, had said that the egg producers will have to stamp each egg with the date of production and also with the date of expiry.
Egg retail companies print packaging dates, and some also print ‘use-by’ dates, to guide customers on egg health but those are mentioned on the trays, not stamped on the shell itself.
Why Egg Health Is Important?
The porous nature of eggshells makes them vulnerable to microbial invasion and therefore, it is ideal to consume them within 7-10 days of laying, provided guidelines on storage are maintained through the supply chain.
A majority of eggs that come to homes are from the open market, and customers have no idea how old they are or in what temperatures they have been stored.
The UP government’s latest guidelines are made in an effort to bring accountability to the supply chain and allow a customer to refuse an egg past its ‘sell-by’ date. The process will make the market more conscious about taking storage and supply seriously.
