Eggs thrown at arrested Trinamool leader amid outrage over extortion allegations

Political tensions flared in West Bengal's Durgapur on Thursday after eggs were allegedly thrown at arrested Trinamool leader Sukumar Dutta while he was being taken to court following his arrest in connection with multiple allegations, including corruption and extortion.

Dutta was arrested by New Township Police Station in Durgapur and was being escorted to the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Court when protesters gathered outside the police station and raised slogans against him.

According to reports, BJP workers and local residents staged a demonstration during the transit and eggs were hurled at Dutta amid the protests. The incident briefly created tension in the area, prompting police to step up security and maintain order.

Reacting to the incident, BJP leader Swadhin Ray claimed the egg-throwing was not organised by the BJP but was an expression of public anger against the Trinamool leader.

Ray alleged that Dutta had long faced accusations of land grabbing, extortion and intimidating local residents. These allegations, however, have not been independently verified.

The BJP leader further claimed that residents had endured years of harassment and exploitation, leading to widespread resentment against Dutta. He demanded strict action against the arrested Trinamool leader and called for an investigation into the role of other local leaders whom he accused of being linked to the alleged activities.

The arrest and subsequent protest have added to the political confrontation between the Trinamool and the BJP in the region, with the opposition demanding a wider probe into the allegations surrounding Dutta.
