At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a train collided with a passenger bus at a railway crossing in Bangkok on Saturday, sparking a fire and causing widespread panic near one of the Thai capital’s busy transit routes.
The crash occurred near Bangkok’s Makkasan area, close to the airport rail link station, when a freight train slammed into an orange public bus at a level crossing. Videos shared online appeared to show vehicles waiting near the tracks moments before the collision.
The impact dragged nearby vehicles along the railway line before the bus burst into flames. Footage from the scene also showed motorcycles and riders being thrown onto the road due to the force of the crash.
Emergency crews rushed to the site, extinguishing the fire before searching the charred bus for survivors and victims. Authorities are yet to confirm the final casualty toll, while an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
The latest tragedy comes months after one of Thailand’s deadliest rail disasters in recent years. In January 2026, at least 32 people were killed and more than 60 injured after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeast of Bangkok. The crane, part of a high-speed rail project, crashed onto two train carriages, causing a derailment and fire. The incident raised major concerns over safety standards in Thailand’s expanding infrastructure sector and triggered investigations into contractors involved in the project.
Thailand has faced repeated scrutiny over transport and construction safety, with rail and road accidents continuing to expose gaps in oversight amid rapid infrastructure development.
