Elephant tramples tribal man to death in Nilgiris

UDHAGAMANDALAM: A tribal man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Kotagiri taluk of the Nilgiris district on Friday evening. The deceased has been identified as B Karamadai, 33, of Vagapanai tribal hamlet. According to forest department officers, Karamadai was returning home through the reserve forest after buying essentials. While he was crossing the Vagapanai slope, a wild elephant attacked him. He died on the spot. The incident occurred around 750 meters away from the tribal hamlet.Forest officers inspected the site. The body was transported to the Kotagiri Government Hospital where a postmortem performed on it on Saturday. The family members of the victim received an initial compensation of Rs 50,000 from the forest department.
