2025 Australian Open quarterfinalist Elina Svitolina left a heartfelt message for her husband, Gael Monfils, who will be playing in his final edition of the tournament, saying that having someone who understands her life is special for both of them.
Svitolina’s husband, Monfils, was in the stands at John Cain Arena in Melbourne Park to cheer her on. After her match against Cristina Bucsa, she grew emotional, reflecting on the fact that this year’s Australian Open is all set to mark Monfils’ farewell appearance at the Melbourne major.
In her post-match, on-court interview, world No. 12 Svitolina was asked how Monfils’ unwavering support has helped her since their relationship started in late 2018. Svitolina started her answer by highlighting how both of them have been pillars of support for each other’s respective professional careers.
“We enjoy a lot, supporting each other in every single tournament. Having someone who understands and supports you every step of the way is special for us. And for him, especially this year, it is gonna be very unique and with lots of different emotions," Svitolina said.
“It is going to be very enjoyable. From my side, I just have to be there for him. Just happy to share the journey," Svitolina added.
Monfils is all set to start his men’s singles campaign at the Australian Open with a first-round match against Australian qualifier Dane Sweeny from Penrith.
Despite being one of the most popular players on the men’s tour thanks to his athleticism and flair, Monfils might find most of the crowd backing Sweeny.
Monfils, a former world No. 6, endured a modest start to the season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where he lost in the first round to Fabian Marozsán despite taking the opening set.
Svitolina was on fire in the women’s singles event in Auckland, with her clinching the WTA 250 title with a final win over Wang Xinyu.
