ENG vs NZ, Third Test Live Score: Missed review, dropped catch haunt England

England's difficult day could have looked very different had a couple of key moments gone their way. Shortly after lunch, Shoaib Bashir struck Devon Conway on the pad when the batter was on 71 and New Zealand were 157 without loss. England chose not to review the decision for lbw, only for television replays to show the ball would have hit the stumps. Later in the innings, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith dropped a straightforward chance when Tom Latham was on 129. Both batters went on to score centuries and added more than 300 runs together. Smith did make amends by taking three catches later in the day, including Latham's dismissal, but the missed opportunities had already allowed New Zealand to build a massive platform. On a flat batting surface, such moments carried enormous value and England were left to wonder what might have happened had those chances been taken.

ENG vs NZ, Live Score: England strike late after long day in field

For much of the opening day, England looked completely outplayed as Tom Latham and Devon Conway batted without offering many chances. But just when New Zealand seemed set for a perfect finish, England produced a burst of four wickets that changed the mood heading into the close. Jamie Smith first caught Latham off Ben Stokes after earlier dropping him on 129. Conway followed just two runs later, dismissed by part-time spinner Joe Root after being caught in the deep. Gus Atkinson then removed Rachin Ravindra for 7 with Smith taking another catch behind the stumps. Finally, Jofra Archer struck with the last ball of the day to dismiss Henry Nicholls for 36. England still finished the day behind after New Zealand reached 361/4, but those wickets ensured the home side remained in the contest instead of allowing the visitors to dominate completely heading into the second day.

ENG vs NZ, Third Test Live Score: Conway shines again after huge opening stand

Devon Conway once again proved why he enjoys batting with Tom Latham at the top of the order. The left-hander compiled 157 and shared a mammoth 317-run opening partnership that put England under pressure throughout Day 1.

Conway's century was his eighth in Test cricket and continued a successful partnership with Latham, who had previously added 323 runs with him against the West Indies at Mount Maunganui. Speaking after stumps, Conway said: "Great day for us. Nice to build a partnership with Tom. I'm pretty happy with how things went for us. I don't know what par is (on this pitch). It's a little disappointing to have lost wickets at the end but we've got a lot of batters in the shed so hopefully we can kick on, keep building those partnerships and see where we get to." Even though he fell for 157, Conway's innings had already put New Zealand in a commanding position heading into Day 2.

ENG vs NZ, Live Score: Latham ends lean run with timely century

Tom Latham could not have picked a better occasion to rediscover his best form. The New Zealand captain came into the third Test after managing only 34 runs across his previous four innings in the series. On Thursday, he answered every question with a composed innings of 151. Latham looked in control from the start and built a massive opening stand alongside Devon Conway that frustrated England throughout the day. His innings also carried historical significance, becoming part of New Zealand's highest opening partnership in a Test in England. Latham's return to runs comes at an important time with the series level at 1-1 and New Zealand aiming for a series victory. His partnership with Conway gave the visitors complete control before England finally managed to break through late in the day. The innings showed exactly why Latham remains one of New Zealand's most dependable batters in the longest format.

England vs New Zealand, Third Test Day 2 Live Score: Latham, Conway put New Zealand in command

Tom Latham and Devon Conway gave New Zealand complete control on the opening day of the third Test with a record-breaking opening stand that left England searching for answers for most of the day. The pair added 317 runs for the first wicket, the highest opening partnership by New Zealand in a Test in England and the country's first 300-plus opening stand against England since 1930.

Latham returned to form in style after scoring just 34 runs in his previous four innings in the series, making 151 for his 17th Test century. Conway matched him stroke for stroke with 157, registering his eighth Test hundred. On a flat pitch at Trent Bridge and in temperatures touching 31 degrees Celsius, England's bowlers struggled to create chances as the left-handed duo batted through session after session. Their partnership laid the perfect platform for New Zealand to push for a huge first-innings total and seize the initiative in this series decider.

Weather watch - It's blazing hot in Nottingham right now, with the temperature expected to touch mid-thirties today. So another tormenting day is on the cards. England will be keen to make use of the second new ball, which is just 4.1 overs old and make inroads and save themselves from what could be another punishing day in the heat.

Another long day? New Zealand have the batting depth to push well beyond 500, and on this pitch, that is not an unrealistic ambition. A total of that size would make England’s task in this Test enormous and with the pitch expected to break out on third or fourth day, batting could really get challenging then. The counter to that, though, is a fast start with the ball in the morning. A couple of wickets in the first session could put a very different ceiling on this innings, and England will know that better than anyone. Will spin play a key role? Or will the pacers rule the roost? Or, or, can New Zealand further bake the English bowlers in another sizzling day in Nottingham? We shall find out soon enough as the first ball of Day 2 is not far away. Stay tuned.

Ghosts of Trent Bridge - Nottingham has a history with New Zealand, and not all of it is fond. The last time they played here, Tim Southee was leading the pace attack. They batted first, piled on 318 for four on day one, got bowled out on 553, and still lost. The ground gave them everything with the bat and took it all back in the end. Four years on, most of the members of that 2022 side are still in this squad. They will remember how that one felt. And while finishing Day 1 on 361/4 is a position most teams would gladly take, that old Nottingham ghost will need to be exorcised this time around against an English side that hasn’t lost a Test at this venue since 2018.

Moments of brilliance - Cricket has a way of turning on the smallest things. Not a wicket, not a boundary, not a moment the highlights reel will linger on for long. Sometimes it is a direct hit from the outfield, or a fielder throwing his body at a ball that was already past him. Small acts, almost invisible in the flow of a long day, that somehow shift the weight of a contest. That is exactly what Shoaib Bashir gave England when they needed it most. With New Zealand cruising and the partnership showing no signs of breaking, Bashir flung himself across the turf and cut off what looked certain to be a boundary. One run saved. Nothing more, nothing less. But something changed in that moment. The energy shifted, the fielding side found a spark, and in the span of just seven balls, both openers were back in the pavilion. Sure, the wickets went to Stokes and Root, respectively, which they equally deserve, but such commitment in the field also acts as a catalyst.

Been there, done that - 317 - That is the number that did the talking on Day 1 at Trent Bridge, and every English bowler who ran in on that flat, unforgiving surface will know exactly what it felt like to be on the wrong side of it. Tom Latham and Devon Conway batted like a pair who have done this sort of thing before, because they have. Six months ago in Mount Maunganui, they put on 323 together against West Indies, the second-highest opening stand in New Zealand Test history. The third-highest is also theirs now. The 317 they put on here is the finest opening partnership ever recorded on English soil by a New Zealand pair, breaking a 96-year-old record which belonged to Dempster and Mills. Their daddy hundreds ensured New Zealand never go out of steam at all.

Patience and self-belief - There is an old saying that patience is one of life’s greatest weapons when barely anything is going your way. Pair it with self-belief strong enough to move mountains, and you have a formula that rarely lets you down. These are not lessons you pick up from a textbook. They arrive through real life grind, through sweat, through hours of honest toil that seem to yield nothing and then suddenly yield something. Ben Stokes and his bowlers learned that the hard way under a punishing sun. They ran in hard, they asked questions, and for almost two and a half sessions, the pitch and the batters gave nothing back. No wickets, no breakthroughs, just effort meeting resistance. And then, just like that, four wickets fell before stumps. England walked off with tired legs and quiet smiles. The job is far from done. New Zealand are batting with purpose and ambition with their eyes fixed on a score that could put this Test well beyond England’s reach. The contest is very much alive, and the hosts know they will need more of the same fight again. Welcome to Day 2 of the 3rd Test at Trent Bridge.

England on top? Definitely not. But those last two wickets have definitely got them back in the game. The Kiwis are on top, but instead of 95 percent, it has drastically come down to 60 percent. The tourists can still get to 550-600 from here on, as the pitch is very good for batting. However, if England can keep up their attitude and intent, believing that they can keep the visitors under 475, things may still be in control for the home side. Given the intense heat, the pitch might start breaking from Day 3 or Day 4, but till then, it should still be good for batting. Don't forget, the Kiwis have a pretty deep batting lineup with Nathan Smith at 8. Here, it will be 9 as Will O'Rourke has already come out to bat. The only problem with England is consistency. The hosts showed glimpses of what they can achieve, but could not be consistent for long periods of time. Can they manage that on Friday? The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 10 am GMT on 26th February, 2026, but our buildup for Day 2 will begin well in advance. Do join us early for all that while till then, you can catch all the action from the Women's T20 World Cup and also, action from the first Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka. Enjoy. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Body language - 2021, Lord's - England needed to bat out 60 overs to get a draw against India. Result? They lost 10 wickets in less than 52 overs. 2004, Wankhede - Australia needed a 'paltry' 107 for a 3-0 series win against India in India. Result? They folded up for 93, inside 31 overs. 2001, Eden Gardens - One of the greatest Tests of all time. With the score reading 161/3 at Tea on Day 5 and the match seeming to head towards a draw, Australia lost 7 wickets in a single session under 26 overs against India. No, this is not a quiz section to test your memory. These are examples of how body language alone has shaped the results of matches, especially Tests, when they seemed dead and gone. Ben Stokes and his team did plenty of that on this day. Things were going against England, they were being burnt out due to the heat, edges were going in gaps, reviews were not being taken correctly and a rare catching chance was put down. The openers were piling on the runs, but Ben Stokes, through his body language alone, kept the whole team positive and twice in the same session, England picked up two wickets in quick succession - First, of both the openers within 7 balls and later, towards the close, of both the set batters on consecutive deliveries. The bowling figures do not paste a great showing - but then, scorecards are not the only gateway to understanding performances, are they?

Batters' paradise - So does it seem. The Black Caps had no hesitation in choosing to bat and the openers themselves bedded in. They batted through the first two sessions, not giving England many chances, but luck favouring them a lot. Both openers - Devon Conway and skipper Tom Latham - got in 150s of their own, making it the first instance since 2003 that a visiting team's opening pair had both the batters scoring centuries in the first innings of a match in England. The partnership was finally broken on 317 - 71 short of what would have been New Zealand's highest ever opening partnership in Test cricket. Both, Conway and Latham looked largely untroubled by skill but physically, both were tiring, due to the incessant heat. At that stage, it seemed like New Zealand will get to 600 by Tea on Day 2 itself. But then...

A superb fightback - Let's just keep the last 4-5 overs, shall we? New Zealand having bossed nearly the whole day, except for a couple of overs when they lost their openers, were looking to bed in nice and tight. But then, a magnificent fielding effort from Shoaib Bashir makes the batters wait for nearly 2-3 minutes before playing their next delivery and the result of that, is a rash shot, followed by a snorter. Before we even know, the batting side loses 2 in 2 balls! The session and the day, largely belonged to the Kiwis, with the last session alone yielding 148 runs in 30.1 overs - but the last 2 balls yielding two wickets have given England plenty to smile about.

Last-minute drama - What else shall we say? On a day where nearly 95 percent had belonged to the visitors, out of nowhere, England have found some energy to actually end the day, well not exactly in parity, but in a much better position than what it seemed just 5 minutes before the close! That's why Test cricket is called so entertaining. Just when we felt that one side is bulldozing this day and even the Test, along comes the other with an iron fist and bulldozes the bulldozer!

New Zealand vs England Live Score : 361/4 (84.1 overs)

Jofra Archer to Henry Nicholls, OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Once again, 1 brings 2 for England, with both set batters dismissed and all of a sudden, the scorecard paints a different picture! With that, it will also be STUMPS ON DAY 1! A length ball, outside off, Henry Nicholls pushes at it but the ball finds a sharp lift and away movement. Nicholls tries to get his bat out of the way but cannot and the ball just about grazes the outside edge. The keeper, Jamie Smith, collects and celebrates with Archer too, bringing out his 'C' celebration. FROM 361/2, NEW ZEALAND ARE NOW 361/4!

With around 4 minutes left in the day, Will O'Rourke has been sent in as the nightwatchman, at number 5, replacing Rachin Ravindra.

Gus Atkinson to Rachin Ravindra, OUT! CAUGHT! Puzzling. Very puzzling shot from Rachin Ravindra, clearly stating his immaturity. That long break on the previous ball has gone against him and his team. Banged in short, outside off, Ravindra decides to take it on and goes for the pull. But he is done in by pace and only manages a top edge. The ball goes straight up the chimney and the keeper, Jamie Smith, stands his ground and takes it calmly! All the English players charge around Shoaib Bashir because had it not been for his fielding effort, Ravindra would not have been on strike! The 42-run stand has been broken and NEW ZEALAND ARE 361/3!

FOUR? Or saved? The umpire is checking a fielding effort by Shoaib Bashir at fine leg and the replay seems to suggest that the ball has hit the boundary cushions. The third umpire is taking a while to get the exact camera angle. Still waiting and checking. And eventually, it has been given as a good save!

New Zealand vs England Live Score : 361/2 (83.5 overs)

Gus Atkinson to Henry Nicholls, Excellent effort by Shoaib Bashir at fine leg. Dropped short, around leg stump, Henry Nicholls pulled it towards long leg. Bashir charged across to his left from long leg and dived, pushing the ball away. The fielding effort was referred upstairs with replays unclear whether the ball deflected onto the ropes from his hand. After nearly 2-and-half minutes of checking, the third umpire rules it in favour of the fielder. Three runs taken, one saved.
