US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday strongly criticised Hezbollah over its reported call to topple Lebanon’s elected government, saying Washington fully supports the Lebanese administration and its efforts to restore stability in the country.
In an official statement, Rubio accused Hezbollah of trying to undermine Lebanon’s future through violence and continued military activity. “The United States condemns in the strongest terms Hizballah’s reckless call to overthrow Lebanon’s democratically elected government," he said.
Rubio stated that the group had ignored repeated appeals from the Lebanese government to respect the ceasefire and stop attacks along the Israeli border. According to the statement, Hezbollah has continued moving fighters and weapons into southern Lebanon while carrying out attacks on Israeli positions.
Calling the actions a deliberate attempt to destabilise the country, Rubio said Hezbollah was trying to maintain its influence “at the expense of the future of the Lebanese people".
The US administration said the Lebanese government is currently focused on recovery, reconstruction and securing international support for its citizens. Washington also reiterated its backing for Beirut as it works to strengthen state authority and restore stability.
“The United States stands firmly with the legitimate Government of Lebanon as it works to restore its authority and build a better future for all its people," Rubio said. He added that Hizballah’s threats of violence and attempts to overthrow the government “will not be allowed to succeed".
In a post on X, Rubio further remarked that “the era in which a terrorist group held an entire nation hostage is coming to an end", reaffirming Washington’s continued support for Lebanon’s elected leadership.
