More than six years after Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma was killed during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, a Delhi court on Monday convicted former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and four others in the murder case, while acquitting six accused for lack of evidence. The court also dropped the charge of criminal conspiracy against Hussain.

Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh of the Karkardooma Court convicted suspended AAP councillor Tahir Hussain under IPC provisions related to murder, promoting enmity between different religious groups, rioting and assault or criminal force used to dishonour a person.

The court, however, acquitted Hussain of the charge of criminal conspiracy.

FIVE CONVICTED, SIX ACQUITTED

Along with Hussain, the court convicted Nazim, Kazim, Javed and Anas. They were found guilty under provisions related to rioting.

Of the 11 accused in the case, six were acquitted after the court found insufficient evidence against them.

According to reports from the courtroom, Tahir Hussain broke down and was seen crying after the judgment was pronounced.

CASE STEMS FROM 2020 DELHI RIOTS

Ankit Sharma, an Intelligence Bureau officer, was killed during the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020. His body was later recovered from a drain, triggering widespread outrage.

The case was registered at Dayalpur Police Station following a complaint filed by Sharma's father.

Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against Hussain and 10 others under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 109, 114, 147, 148, 149, 153A, 302, 365, 436, 505, 201, 120B and 34.

The court's verdict marks one of the most significant judgments in a case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. Sentencing is expected to follow in accordance with legal procedure.
