The Chhattisgarh High Court has convicted Amit Jogi, son of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, in connection with the murder of NCP leader Ramavatar Jaggi. The ruling comes nearly 23 years after the killing, with the court directing Jogi to surrender within three weeks. The judgment, passed on Thursday, reverses a 2007 trial court decision that had acquitted him.

The case was revived last month after the Supreme Court allowed a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The apex court had earlier noted that despite delays in filing the appeal, the allegations against Jogi were “very grave," involving a conspiracy to eliminate a political rival.

A division bench led by Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Arvind Kumar Verma set aside the earlier acquittal and held Jogi guilty.

‘Not Given Fair Chance’: Amit Jogi After HC Ruling

Responding to the verdict, Amit Jogi called the decision unjust, claiming he was denied a fair hearing. In a post on X, he said the High Court accepted the CBI’s appeal “in just 40 minutes" without allowing him to present his case.

… pic.twitter.com/t70pLdLTJ7

“I regret that a person who had been acquitted by a court has now been declared guilty without even a single chance for a hearing. This has never happened before," he said, adding that he has faith in the judiciary and will approach the top court.

Meanwhile, Satish Jaggi, son of the victim, welcomed the ruling, calling it justice after a long wait. “Today is Hanuman Jayanti. I bow before Lord Hanuman. My family’s 20-year-long penance has borne fruit. My faith in the judiciary has been vindicated," he said.

Ramavatar Jaggi was shot dead in Raipur on June 4, 2003. The case, initially handled by state police, was later transferred to the CBI. While a trial court convicted 28 individuals in 2007, Amit Jogi was acquitted, and subsequent appeals were dismissed in 2011 due to delays.
