Madhubani: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) formally commenced excavation work at the ancient and historically significant site of Balirajgarh in Madhubani district on Saturday. The excavation at Balirajgarh, located under Baboobarhi block of the district, began in the presence of JD(U) working president and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Kumar Jha.Speaking on the occasion, Jha said Balirajgarh holds immense archaeological importance as an ancient site linked to the rich cultural heritage of Mithila. He lamented that the historicity of the cultural and social past of Mithila still remains to be fully explored.
He said the excavation was expected to uncover vital evidence highlighting the glorious past of the region’s civilisation, which possibly dates back to the Ramayan period. To support his point, he cited the discovery of Northern Black Polished Coin (NBPC) in earlier excavations at the site, which, unfortunately, had to be left midway owing to various reasons. This time, however, he said he had been assured by the superintendent of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Patna, Hari Om Sharan, who was also present on the occasion, that the excavation would continue thoroughly to uncover whatever lies buried within the mound of Balirajgarh, which is spread over an area of 176 acres.
He added that the excavation would open new avenues for historical research and academic studies while bringing global recognition to Mithila’s legacy.Jha expressed confidence that the initiative would boost tourism in Madhubani district and transform its economy. He said it could generate local employment opportunities, promote economic empowerment and drive the development of basic infrastructure in the region. The initiative would also help establish Mithila’s rich cultural identity on both national and international platforms, Jha asserted.Among those present on the occasion were Jhanjharpur Lok Sabha MP of JD(U) Ramprit Mandal, district magistrate Anand Sharma, SP Yogendra Kumar, superintendent of ASI Patna Hari Om Sharan and others.
