The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday trained guns at Congress MP and LoP in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, after former Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane junked the narratives of territorial loss to China.

During the budget session of Parliament in February, LoP Rahul Gandhi attempted to quote from the unpublished memoir of General Naravane, ‘Four Stars of Destiny’. However, the Speaker stopped him as the book had not been published at the time.

“Naravane has said that not even an inch of land was given to China. Rahul Gandhi created confusion, but now Naravane has broken his silence and exposed Rahul Gandhi’s lies", said BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.

Citing General Naravane, the BJP leader stressed the army had political backing during the 2020 standoff with China.

‘Unfair To Drag Me, Army Into Politics’

In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, General Naravane opened up on the controversy, saying it was “totally unfair to drag me and the armed forces into politics" by using unpublished texts to score points.

When questioned about the ground reality of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and ongoing border tensions with Beijing, General Naravane said, “To finish all the doubts at once, just ask the Chinese whether they gained any ground in India recently."

What Is The Controversy?

Back in February, Gen Naravane’s unpublished memoir, ‘Four Stars of Destiny’, emerged as the centre of a political stir in the country after LoP Rahul Gandhi attempted to quote snippets from the book in the Lok Sabha.

After being denied to quote from the unpublished memoir, Gandhi was seen bringing a copy of the same during the remainder of the session.

Citing excerpts from the book, the Congress MP had claimed the former Army Chief informed Rajnath Singh and others about “Chinese tanks approaching", alleging there was no direct reply from the government for a long time.

The incident he was referring to happened on August 31, 2020, as the Chinese military advanced towards Rechin La, Ladakh.

The memoir was supposed to be released in 2024 by Penguin. However, it is currently pending approval with the Ministry of Defence.
