Another twist in Formula 1’s ever-shifting management landscape, and this one comes with immediate impact.

Jonathan Wheatley has stepped down from his role with Audi with immediate effect, just a year after joining the project. And the timing? Hardly coincidental.

Sudden Exit at Audi

Wheatley, who moved to Audi’s Formula 1 setup after leaving Red Bull Racing as sporting director at the end of 2024, had been working out of the team’s Swiss base.

But in a brief statement, Audi confirmed his departure, citing “personal reasons."

Behind the scenes, though, there’s more to the story.

The 58-year-old Englishman had reportedly been keen to return to the UK — something that appears to have played a key role in his decision to leave early, despite being under contract through at least the end of the year.

Aston Martin Link Grows Stronger

The development comes just a day after reports emerged linking Wheatley to a potential move to Aston Martin.

Team owner Lawrence Stroll is understood to have approached Wheatley with an offer to take over as team principal, working alongside technical partner Adrian Newey.

While Aston Martin have yet to officially confirm their interest, the timing of Wheatley’s exit has only fuelled speculation.

He will now enter a period of “gardening leave", a standard clause in F1 contracts, before any potential move can be finalised.

Another Shake-Up for Audi

For Audi, this marks yet another leadership change.

Mattia Binotto will now take on additional responsibilities, combining his current role as head of the Audi F1 project with team principal duties on an interim basis.

The German manufacturer is not expected to rush into a like-for-like replacement, instead likely to restructure leadership to separate operational and strategic roles.

What This Means for Both Teams

The timing is significant for both outfits.

Aston Martin have endured a difficult start to the season, sitting last in the standings after two races, with performance and reliability concerns surrounding their car.

For Audi, meanwhile, stability remains a concern as they continue to build toward their full F1 entry.
