Manchester City coasted to a resounding 2-0 win over fourth-tier side Salford FC on Saturday thanks to new recruit Marc Guehi’s maiden goal for the club, and an own goal.
City took an early lead through an Alfie Dorrington own goal, but it was only nine minutes from time when England defender Guehi sealed the victory with his first goal since joining from Crystal Palace in January.
Owned by Manchester United legends David Beckham and Gary Neville, Salford were participating in the fourth round for the first time in their history. Despite being humbled 8-0 by City in the third round last season, the League Two side put up a stronger fight on Saturday.
“They defended really well, so tight and we didn’t attack the spaces the way we should. The game was flat until we scored the second goal," said Guardiola.
Liverpool also eased into the subsequent round of the cup competition with a 3-0 win over Brighton on Saturday as goals from Mohamed Salah, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai helped Are Slot and Co. breeze past fellow Premier League side.
Sandro Tonali scored twice as Newcastle came from behind to beat a 10-man Aston Villa 3-1 as Unai Emery’s team missed another chance to end a 30-year wait for silverware after goalkeeper Marco Bizot received a first-half red card.
West Ham narrowly advanced as Crysencio Summerville’s goal in extra-time clinched a 1-0 victory at League One Burton. Third-tier Mansfield caused the upset of the day by defeating Premier League Burnley 2-1, reaching the fifth round for the first time since 1975. Burnley manager Scott Parker made nine changes, which backfired despite taking the lead through Josh Laurent’s 21st-minute goal. Rhys Oates equalised in the 53rd minute, and Louis Reed’s brilliant free-kick 10 minutes from full-time secured the win.
