Family alleges medical negligence in death of 54-year-old man in Kochi

The Edathala police have registered a case after the family members of a Chottanikkara native, who died following a surgery at Rajagiri Hospital near Aluva, alleged that he had died owing to medical negligence.

Biju N.T., 54, had undergone a surgery on June 27 after he was admitted on June 25 following back pain and weakness in his right leg. He was shifted to a room after two hours of observation. He had developed uneasiness in the night and underwent scanning. He died on June 30.

His family members alleged that he had died following complications during the keyhole surgery for back pain. They alleged serious lapses on the part of the hospital in providing timely care for him after he had experienced severe pain after the surgery.

A release issued by the hospital management said that necessary follow-up treatment was provided to the patient after he had developed uneasiness on June 27 night. Unfortunately, he died on Monday evening. The hospital authorities have recommended a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of the death. The hospital would fully cooperate with any inquiry, it said.

The police said they were investigating the death and were waiting for the post-mortem report.
