Farhad Samji opens up about Akshay Kumar’s fourth-wall moment in 'Welcome To The Jungle': “This was the only option”
Akshay Kumar's comedy entertainer 'Welcome To The Jungle' has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the Indian box office, giving the makers another reason to celebrate. Amid the film's successful theatrical run, writer Farhad Samji reflected on the long creative process behind the project, the challenge of handling an ensemble cast of over 34 actors, the much-discussed fourth-wall-breaking interval scene, and why he feels audiences today only care about whether a film delivers value for their money.
Comedy gives instant audience reactions
For Farhad Samji, comedy remains one of the few genres where audience response is immediate and impossible to miss.In a conversation with Hindustan Times, he shared, "The love from the crowd over the last few days has exceeded expectations; they are turning the theater into a stadium. With a thriller, you are in a skeptical or suspenseful mood, but comedy is a genre where you hear people laughing and see their body language, so you immediately know they are enjoying it."He also revealed that 'Welcome To The Jungle' was not an overnight project. The script took almost three-and-a-half years to reach its final version before it was narrated to Akshay Kumar. Since the film marked the third instalment in the franchise, the team wanted to raise the scale considerably."We knew from day one that it needed an ensemble cast to attract the audience. We felt we didn’t just need good actors, but recognizable faces since it’s a third-part franchise."
Keeping a 34-member cast on the same page
Managing such a massive lineup could have become difficult, but Farhad believes transparency solved most problems. Instead of making exaggerated promises, he clearly explained every actor's contribution before filming began."What works for us is transparency. We don't promise someone a massive role and then avoid them on Friday because we didn't deliver. I haven't done that in 25 years. The actors love the transparency."
According to him, impactful writing matters more than lengthy screen presence.
"We put a lot of hard work into characterization. Even with limited screen time, characters like those played by Farida Jalal and Kirron Kher get praised because of their characterization. For example, Johnny Lever's character goes mute while talking, or Jacqueline's character is so 'dumb' she asks about a horse when there are real weapons around. These punches land because the characters themselves are funny."
The story behind the fourth-wall-breaking interval scene
One sequence that has generated significant buzz is Akshay Kumar's direct interaction with the audience before the interval, when he says, "You must be getting up from your seats for the interval now."Farhad clarified that the scene was never created with the intention of becoming a viral moment. Instead, it emerged while solving a storytelling problem."As a creator, I know the audience wants to see the jungle story, and a song, no matter how much of a hit, can break the story flow."He added, "This [fourth-wall break] was the only option, and it paid off as a big 'gimmick.' People got to see the song and laugh at the same time."
Farhad responds to criticism over female characters
Although the film has been commercially successful, some viewers on social media felt that the comic portions featuring Disha Patani and
Jacqueline Fernandez
were not as effective as those of the veteran comedians.Farhad defended the writing, explaining that each role was intentionally designed with a distinct personality."Every character has an arc and a specific language. If I gave Jacqueline or Disha the traits of Johnny Lever, it wouldn't fit their characters. They knew their roles as the leading ladies and love interests... Our job is like preparing a buffet; we serve food for everyone. Just because one dish isn't the most popular doesn't mean it's bad; it's about variety."He further added, "I can say with pride that the women in this film had a lot to do, with specific punches that usually aren't given to female characters."
Audiences now judge films by value for money
Farhad believes the post-pandemic theatrical landscape has changed drastically, with viewers focusing less on star power or formulas and more on whether a ticket is worth the expense."There is no formula post-pandemic. People want their hard-earned money to be worth it. If a family of four goes out, they spend 2000-3000 rupees; it has to be worth their time."Recalling a personal experience, he shared how even his driver sought reassurance before spending money on the film."He earns 25,000, and he knows taking his family will cost him 3,000. He asked me, 'Sir, the film is good, right?' because that's a lot of money for a middle-class person. In the end, it's your content that speaks. If the material is good, it will be appreciated."
