Punjab opens post-matric scholarship portal for SC students, sets November 15 deadline for 2026–27 applications

The Punjab government has started the application process for the 2026–27 Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Caste students through the National Scholarship Portal. Eligible applicants can apply until November 15, with the state directing institutions and officials to ensure timely verification and wider awareness of the scheme.

The Punjab government has opened applications for the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Caste (SC) students for the 2026-27 academic session, giving thousands of eligible students an opportunity to pursue higher education without the burden of financial hardship.Announcing the launch on Sunday, Punjab Social Justice, Empowerment, and Minorities Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said applications are being accepted through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) from July 1. She urged all eligible students to complete the application process well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that financial limitations do not force deserving students to abandon their academic aspirations.

Application timeline announced

The department has laid down a detailed schedule for the scholarship process. Students can submit their applications until November 15, 2026. Those whose applications contain errors will be allowed to make corrections up to November 30.Educational institutions have been instructed to complete institute-level verification by November 30, while the final scrutiny by District, State and Ministry Nodal Officers will conclude by December 15.

The structured timeline is intended to ensure timely processing and disbursement of scholarship benefits.

Government stresses equal access to education

Dr Baljit Kaur said the scholarship scheme reflects the Punjab government's commitment to expanding educational opportunities for Scheduled Caste students and strengthening social justice through education. She said the initiative aligns with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's vision of building a "Rangla Punjab," where deserving students can access quality education regardless of their financial background.According to the minister, higher education should be determined by talent and ambition, not by a family's economic condition.

Scholarship linked to employment and reducing migration

The minister also underlined the government's broader focus on generating employment opportunities within Punjab. She said scholarship programmes, when combined with transparent and merit-based recruitment, can reduce the financial pressure on economically weaker families while encouraging educated youth to build their careers within the state. The government believes that improving access to education and employment can also help discourage the migration of skilled young people in search of opportunities elsewhere.

District officials directed to maximise awareness

To ensure that every eligible student benefits from the scheme, Dr Baljit Kaur has instructed District Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities Officers to organise awareness and facilitation camps across villages, towns and remote areas. These camps will help students understand the eligibility criteria, complete application formalities and avoid mistakes that could delay the approval of their scholarship applications.

Educational institutions assigned a key role

The minister has also directed multiple government departments—including Higher Education, Medical Education and Research, Technical Education and Industrial Training, School Education, and Animal Husbandry—to work closely with affiliated institutions in helping eligible students complete their applications within the prescribed deadlines.Colleges and educational institutions have been asked to actively assist applicants and ensure that verification is completed on time.

Government reiterates commitment

Reaffirming the state's position, Dr Baljit Kaur said the Punjab government will continue extending every possible support to deserving students so that financial challenges do not stand in the way of higher education. With the application process now underway, the government has placed equal emphasis on financial assistance, institutional support and awareness campaigns to ensure that the scholarship reaches every eligible Scheduled Caste student across Punjab.(With PTI inputs)
