Farmers were given the opportunity to test the newly-launched E-Tractor and E-Tiller, developed by the CSIR - Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI-Durgapur), at the CSIR - National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), as part of a nationwide road show held on Thursday.

Designed primarily for small and marginal farmers, the electric machines offer a clean, cost-effective, and low-maintenance alternative to conventional diesel-powered equipment. Their compact build, ease of operation, and reduced vibration make them particularly suitable for women farmers, including those working in traditional attire, thereby enhancing accessibility, comfort, and productivity, according to a press release.

Farmers suggested improvements such as enhanced power capacity, solar charging options, and subsidised access to boost adoption. CSIR-NGRI Director Prakash Kumar stated that such innovations are crucial in addressing the practical needs of marginal farming communities, where affordability, efficiency, and ease of use are vital. He also highlighted the institute’s contributions to societal applications, particularly in geotechnical research and groundwater exploration and management.

CSIR-IICT Director D. Srinivas Reddy emphasized the ergonomic and economic advantages of these electric machines, especially for women and smallholder farmers. Dr. Naresh Chandra Murmu, Director of CSIR-CMERI, reiterated that these vehicles represent eco-friendly alternatives to diesel-powered machinery. The event witnessed participation from over 150 stakeholders, including farmers, industry representatives, and policymakers.

The roadshow, originally flagged off by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on National Science Day 2025, has covered major agricultural regions across the country, promoting awareness and adoption of sustainable farm technologies. The event will conclude at CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, the release added.
