A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 11-year-old twin daughters by slitting their throats. The horrifying incident took place at the family’s residence in the city.

Police were alerted to the killings in the early hours of Sunday, prompting senior officers to rush to the scene and initiate an investigation. The incident came to light after the accused himself informed the authorities, India Today reported.

Following the double murder, the accused’s wife, Reshma Chhetri, levelled serious allegations against him, claiming he was an alcoholic who frequently subjected her to physical abuse and denied her food. She said their relationship, which began with a love marriage in 2014, deteriorated soon after.

Reshma alleged that her husband had installed CCTV cameras throughout the house, including inside his room, and would assault her whenever she tried to visit her parental home. She further claimed that he insisted she leave with their son while keeping their daughters with him. According to her, she was eventually forced to stay at her parents’ home with her son, leaving the twin girls behind because her husband refused to let them go with her.

She said she returned after about nine months, finding it difficult to stay away from her daughters. However, she claimed she was not allowed to enter her husband’s room. Reshma also alleged that he would often speak about harming himself and the twins.

Recounting the events before the crime, she said the night appeared normal, with the family having dinner together. Later, her husband took the twins into his room to sleep. She said CCTV footage showed him talking on the phone for a long time. Around 2:30 am, she saw him take one of the girls to the bathroom before returning to the room shortly after.

Reshma said he then switched off the lights, after which there was no sound from inside. Assuming everyone had gone to sleep, she said she remained unaware of what had happened until later.

Police said the bodies of both girls were discovered inside the house with deep cuts on their necks. A forensic team was called in to collect evidence and assist in the investigation.
