For years, it has felt like nothing could slow down Fernando Alonso: not the relentless grind, not injuries, not even Father Time.
But now, the two-time world champion admits something finally has the power to reshape his future: fatherhood.
Speaking to Sky Sports, as reported by PlanetF1, the Aston Martin driver revealed that becoming a father has dramatically altered the way he thinks about retirement.
And surprisingly, it may not push him away from racing just yet — it could actually convince him to stay a little longer.
“I have some thoughts, I cannot lie. It does change the way you see life," Alonso admitted.
“I have to say that it is going in the other direction. I want to race so he sees me racing."
The 44-year-old Spaniard is currently in the final year of his Aston Martin contract, and many expected an extension for 2027 to be little more than a formality. Instead, Alonso now appears genuinely undecided.
“I was thinking, if I race one or two more years, if he will have any memory or any understanding of what is going on at the paddock and things like that?" Alonso explained.
“I would like not to stop before he is in the paddock, or he sits in my car, and this kind of thing."
“They are moments you will remember all your life, so it does change [your thinking] to be a father," he added.
Summer Decision Looms
Despite the uncertainty around his Formula 1 future, Alonso made one thing crystal clear: retirement from F1 would not necessarily mean retirement from racing altogether.
“If I stop racing, I know that I will race in other series," he said.
The Spaniard also confirmed he plans to make a final decision sometime after the summer break, with Aston Martin’s progress playing a major role.
“We need to see also how the car improves and how we see things into next year," Alonso said.
