In the wake of the flashpoint between Real Madrid CF and SL Benfica, FIFA is considering fresh regulations aimed at cracking down on on-field abuse.
According to Sky Sports News, FIFA officials are examining the introduction of what has been informally dubbed the “Prestianni Law": a proposed rule that would allow sanctions against players who deliberately cover their mouths while directing abuse at opponents.
The discussion follows allegations that Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni pulled his shirt over his mouth before making a racist remark toward Vinícius Júnior during their Champions League play-off clash.
Vinícius reported the alleged slur during the match, prompting widespread reaction and a subsequent investigation.
Players’ Voice Committee to Review Proposal
The matter is expected to be discussed by FIFA’s Players’ Voice Committee: a group of footballers who advise the governing body on laws, conduct and player welfare.
The committee will reportedly consider whether covering the mouth while delivering offensive remarks should itself be treated as aggravating behaviour, potentially leading to disciplinary action.
According to reports, the initiative aims to boost transparency and accountability on the pitch by discouraging attempts to conceal insults or aggressive language from cameras and officials.
The move comes amid increasing pressure on football authorities to take stronger action against racism and unsporting conduct.
Clubs and FIFA Respond
Real Madrid confirmed they have submitted all available evidence to UEFA as part of its ongoing investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the alleged abuse.
“I was shocked and saddened to see the incident of alleged racism towards Vinicius Junior," Infantino said.
“There is absolutely no room for racism in our sport and in society — we need all the relevant stakeholders to take action and hold those responsible to account."
FIFA’s review signals that football’s lawmakers may now be looking beyond words alone and at the gestures used to hide them.
