The eyes of the football world will be fixed firmly on Group A when the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway.
The tournament opens with hosts Mexico taking on South Africa at the iconic, newly renovated Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — a rematch of the memorable 2010 World Cup opener that ended in a thrilling draw. Later that day, South Korea face Czechia in Guadalajara, completing an intriguing opening round of fixtures.
With football woven into the fabric of Mexican culture, Group A carries a unique atmosphere. Every match involving El Tri is expected to feel like a major event, and that could become either their greatest advantage or biggest challenge.
X Factor: Can Mexico Handle The Pressure?
The biggest storyline in Group A is not necessarily Mexico the team, but Mexico the host nation.
Playing at home brings obvious benefits — familiar conditions, passionate support and a nation rallying behind the squad. But it also comes with enormous expectations. Mexico have traditionally performed well on home soil and will be desperate to make a deep run after years of near-misses on the global stage.
South Korea’s Final Son Heung-min World Cup?
South Korea arrive with plenty of quality and experience.
Captain Son Heung-min is set for what could be his fourth and final World Cup appearance, while Lee Kang-in and Kim Min-jae add genuine European pedigree. Hong Myung-bo’s side were the only Asian nation to navigate qualifying unbeaten and have enough talent to challenge Mexico for top spot.
South Africa Return To The Big Stage
South Africa are back at the World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010.
Led by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and experienced attackers Percy Tau and Themba Zwane, Bafana Bafana enter as underdogs but possess enough quality to spring a surprise.
Czechia Looking To Prove A Point
Czechia squeezed through UEFA qualifying via the playoffs and arrive with a squad packed with top-level European experience.
Captain Tomas Soucek remains their heartbeat, while goalkeeper Matej Kovar is regarded as one of the tournament’s more underrated shot-stoppers.
