For the first time in history, Canada will host FIFA World Cup matches on home soil — and they will do so in a Group B that promises plenty of intrigue.
Joining the co-hosts are European heavyweights Switzerland, World Cup returnees Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Asian champions Qatar. It is a group that spans three confederations and offers no easy path to the knockout rounds.
While Switzerland enter as the highest-ranked team and favourites to top the group, much of the spotlight will be on Canada and whether they can harness home support to reach the last 16.
Canada’s Moment Has Arrived
The Canadians begin their campaign in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina before facing Qatar in Vancouver and Switzerland in what could be a decisive final group-stage clash.
Home advantage is expected to be significant, but Canada’s biggest concern remains the fitness of captain and superstar Alphonso Davies.
The Bayern Munich defender suffered an ACL injury while on international duty in March and underwent surgery shortly afterwards. His recovery timeline has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding Canada’s World Cup preparations.
X Factor: How Effective Will Davies Be?
Much of Canada’s hopes rest on Davies returning to full fitness and rediscovering the form that has made him one of the most dynamic full-backs in world football.
The injury also sparked tensions between Bayern Munich and Canada Soccer, with the German giants publicly criticising the handling of the situation.
If Davies returns anywhere near his best, Canada instantly become a far more dangerous proposition.
Switzerland Bring Stability And Experience
Switzerland arrive as the group favourites thanks to a squad packed with tournament experience and a long-standing reputation for consistency on the international stage.
The Swiss rarely beat themselves and have become one of Europe’s most reliable tournament teams, making them the benchmark side in Group B.
Bosnia Back On The Big Stage
Bosnia and Herzegovina are returning to the World Cup for the first time since their debut appearance in 2014.
With a talented core and plenty of motivation, they will be determined to prove they belong among the tournament’s emerging challengers.
Qatar Looking To Surprise
Qatar may be ranked 51st in the world, but they arrive with momentum after topping Group A in Asia’s fourth-round playoffs.
Now coached by Julen Lopetegui, Qatar will hope their recent tournament experience helps them spring a surprise.
