Norway are preparing for their long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup, with head coach Stale Solbakken confident that star striker Erling Haaland can play a decisive role in ending the nation’s 28-year absence from football’s biggest stage.
The Scandinavian side begin their Group I campaign against Iraq in Boston on Tuesday, marking Norway’s first World Cup appearance since France 1998. Drawn alongside heavyweights France and Senegal, Solbakken knows a strong start could be crucial to their hopes of advancing.
A major source of optimism is Erling Haaland, whose extraordinary scoring record has transformed Norway into one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking teams. The Manchester City forward scored 16 goals during qualification as Norway won every match and secured their place at the tournament in dominant fashion.

Solbakken believes the 25-year-old has arrived at the FIFA World Cup in peak condition and is ready to make his mark.
“Hopefully he’ll have a very big impact," said the Norwegian coach.

Can Haaland Make The Difference For Norway?
The manager reserved special praise for his star forward’s finishing ability, adding: “He’s our goalscorer. I think he’s the world’s best goalscorer. He’s physically fit, he was given a little bit of a break towards the end of the season."
“I think gradually he has played better and better in training here. I think he’s where he wants to be and hopefully the team can also give him the service he needs to score goals."
“If you give Erling chances, he has a tendency to score, so hopefully that continues."
Haaland’s influence extends beyond goals. Solbakken believes his presence has raised the confidence levels of those around him, helping Norway develop into a stronger collective unit.
Despite being favourites against Iraq, the coach remains wary of the challenge ahead.
“We are in a very competitive group, maybe the hardest of all. If you can start with three points then maybe you are on your way. You can’t hide that it’s a very important game."
Reflecting on the significance of leading Norway back to the World Cup, Solbakken said: “For every citizen, to lead out his country in a game like this, especially after 28 years of hurt, that is perhaps the top thing, the number one thing on the list."
