FIFA World Cup travel restrictions suddenly create nightmare scenario for New York Knicks fans chasing NBA Finals (Image via Getty)
New York Knicks fans are already dreaming about the NBA Finals. But now, many of them are also worried about how they would even get to Madison Square Garden if the team makes it that far.
A planned shutdown at Penn Station during the FIFA World Cup could create a huge travel mess for thousands of fans trying to attend possible Finals games in New York. The concern started spreading online after fans noticed that some World Cup match dates at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey overlap with possible NBA Finals dates. Penn Station, one of the busiest train hubs in the United States, is expected to limit access during those matches.
According to earlier reports, only fans with World Cup tickets will be allowed into certain parts of the station for several hours before and after games. That could become a serious problem for New Jersey-based Knicks fans because Penn Station is one of the main ways people travel into Manhattan for games at Madison Square Garden. With the Knicks now in the Eastern Conference Finals after beating the Philadelphia 76ers, fans have already started thinking ahead about what could happen if the team reaches its first NBA Finals since 1999.
New York Knicks fans fear Penn Station shutdown could turn NBA Finals trip into chaos
The travel concerns mainly focus on June 13 and June 16. Those are the dates when MetLife Stadium will host FIFA World Cup matches between Brazil and Morocco, and then France and Senegal. Those same days also line up with possible Game 5 and Game 6 dates for the NBA Finals. If the New York Knicks reach the Finals, one of those games would likely take place at Madison Square Garden. That is why fans quickly began reacting online after learning about the possible restrictions at Penn Station. One fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Penn Station being shut down to NJ Transit riders from 5pm to 8pm on the night of Game 6 of the NBA Finals is nightmare fuel stuff for Jersey-based Knicks fans.”The issue comes from crowd control plans connected to the World Cup. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey is hosting eight matches this summer, including the tournament final. Because of the expected heavy crowds, Penn Station will reportedly give priority access to soccer fans traveling to the stadium through NJ Transit routes. For Knicks fans living in New Jersey, that could mean long delays, crowded trains, or finding completely different ways to get into New York City on game nights. At the same time, some basketball fans are trying not to look too far ahead. The Knicks still need to get through the Eastern Conference Finals against either the Cleveland Cavaliers or Detroit Pistons before they can think about the NBA Finals. If they advance again, they could face teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, or San Antonio Spurs. Still, after years of waiting for a deep playoff run, many fans are already preparing for every possible situation, including a stressful trip to the arena.
