The High Grounds police on Thursday registered an FIR against the convenor and co-convenor of the Assam BJP party social media accounts for posting an objectionable video on the account, edited to depict the Assam Chief Minister shooting a group of men from a minority community. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later denied any knowledge of such a video, and it was deleted from social media platforms.
According to the complaint by Ranjith Kumar, an officebearer of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, dated February 8, a post circulated on a social media platform on February 7, was found to contain objectionable and potentially provocative content. The complainant alleged that the content could disturb public peace and promote enmity.
According to the FIR, the accused Biswajith Khaund and Ron Bikash Gourav have been charged for offences under Sections 192 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), and353(2) (criminalises the circulation of false information, rumours, or reports intended to incite hatred, enmity, or ill-will between different religious, racial, language, or regional groups) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
