Florida Lawmakers Approve Bill To Rename Palm Beach Airport After Donald Trump

Florida’s Republican-led legislature on Thursday approved a bill to rename the Palm Beach International Airport as the President Donald J. Trump International Airport, adding another high-profile facility to the current US president’s name.

Governor Ron DeSantis, who once opposed Trump, is expected to sign the measure into law.

The airport, located in Palm Beach just minutes from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, will also require approval from the Federal Aviation Administration before the renaming can take effect.

The move is part of Trump’s ongoing campaign to leave his mark on public institutions across the country.

Trump, a real estate mogul who has long branded buildings worldwide with his name, has extended this strategy to national landmarks. In December, the board of the Kennedy Center in Washington, which Trump handpicked, voted to rename the arts complex the Trump-Kennedy Center. The same month, the State Department added his name to the US Institute of Peace.

He has also reportedly tried to rename New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles International Airport after himself, though those efforts were blocked.

Drafts have even been prepared for a commemorative $1 coin featuring Trump’s image, despite laws prohibiting the likeness of a sitting president on currency.

On Thursday, a large banner featuring Trump’s face was displayed at the US Justice Department headquarters, an unusual public display for an agency traditionally considered independent of political influence.
