A shocking medical incident was reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Basti, where a newborn’s body was separated during a delivery attempt, with the severed head remaining inside the mother’s womb.

The incident occurred on Monday when Prema Devi, who was seven months pregnant, went into labour while being transported in an ambulance to the Community Health Centre in Kudraha. As her condition worsened before reaching the facility, labour pains intensified during the journey.

According to her husband, Neeraj Kumar, an ASHA worker present in the ambulance administered a painkiller injection and attempted to conduct a normal delivery instead of waiting for a specialist. During the process, the baby’s body was delivered while the head remained inside, NDTV reported.

Following this, the woman was declared critical and taken to a nearby private hospital. From there, she was referred to the District Medical College in Kaili due to the complexity of the case.

Medical examination, including ultrasound tests, confirmed the condition. Doctors then performed an emergency surgery to remove the baby’s head. “We operated on a priority basis and removed the head. Currently, the woman is safe and is undergoing treatment," a doctor said.

A case has been registered against the ASHA worker and other healthcare staff present in the ambulance. Further action from the administration is awaited.
