Former CG Congress treasurer detained by EOW after three years in liquor, coal levy probes

Raipur: Former Chhattisgarh Congress treasurer Ramgopal Agrawal, an accused in the alleged liquor, coal levy and custom milling scams, was detained by the state’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) after he appeared before the agency in Raipur on Wednesday, nearly three years after he went off the radar.EOW officials have not yet issued an official statement on the detention. A senior official told TOI that Agrawal appeared at the agency’s office, where he was taken into custody for questioning in connection with multiple ongoing investigations.Agrawal, who also served as chairman of the erstwhile Chhattisgarh state civil supplies corporation, has been on the radar of the EOW and the enforcement directorate over his alleged role in the cases.His appearance came a day after the EOW questioned his son, Vaibhav Agrawal, for several hours. Officials said investigators sought details about Ramgopal Agrawal’s whereabouts over the past three years, his financial transactions and his alleged associates. The agency has not disclosed the contents of the questioning.Agrawal is among the alleged accused in the multi-crore liquor scam, the alleged coal levy scam, being probed by EOW and ED.According to investigators, Agrawal had remained out of public view for nearly three years, with speculation about his presence in different parts of the country and abroad. Agencies had been attempting to trace him during this period.
