Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister and Bidar district in-charge Eshwar B. Khandre has emphasised the importance of early diagnosis of cancer saying that the disease is fully curable if detected in the initial stage.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the construction of a 100-bed Kidwai Peripheral Cancer Treatment Unit on the premises of Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) in Bidar on Wednesday.

The project, undertaken jointly by the district administration, BRIMS and the Kalyana Karnataka Regional Development Board, will be executed at an estimated cost of ₹36 crore.

Mr. Khandre expressed concern over the rising incidence of oral cancer attributed to the widespread use of gutka and tobacco as well as the increasing prevalence of breast cancer among women.

Terming the trend alarming, he underscored the critical importance of preventive healthcare and urged citizens to desist from harmful habits such as tobacco consumption.

He said that the upcoming healthcare facility being developed in collaboration with Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology will be equipped with modern infrastructure and advanced medical technology significantly strengthening cancer care services in the district.

The Kidwai unit will play a vital role in enabling early detection and ensuring timely and effective treatment thereby, saving numerous lives, he said.

Minister for Municipal Administration and Haj Rahim Khan observed that four hospitals are being established in the district to expand access to healthcare. He emphasised that quality medical services must be made available to all sections of society and expressed the confidence that the new cancer treatment facility will greatly benefit patients in Bidar and the surrounding regions.

Command Area Development Authority Chairman Babu Honna Naik, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shivanand Karale and BRIMS Director Shantala Koujalgi were present on the occasion.
