Leicester City have been dealt a crushing blow in their fight for survival after losing their appeal against a six-point deduction for breaching financial rules.
The punishment, imposed in February by an independent commission, will stand, and it could define their season.
The deduction initially dropped the Foxes from 17th to 20th. Since then, results have worsened, and they now sit 22nd in the EFL Championship: one point from safety with just five matches left.
What Went Wrong
The case stems from a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2023–24 campaign. Although the charge was first brought by the Premier League, it was taken over by the EFL after Leicester’s relegation.
Under PSR, clubs are limited to losses of £105 million over three years, reduced by £22 million for every season spent outside the top flight. Leicester were found to have exceeded the EFL’s £83 million threshold by £20.8 million.
The club’s defence hinged on a technicality — arguing their accounts should be assessed over 36 months instead of 37 due to a filing delay.
The commission rejected that claim, effectively sealing their fate.
Club Reaction
Leicester had initially labelled the punishment “disproportionate," but with the appeal now dismissed, the tone has shifted.
“With the matter now at an end… everyone at the club is fully focused on the matches in front of us," the club said in a statement.
“We know this has been a challenging period… The responsibility now is to ensure these remaining games are approached with the focus and intent our current situation demands."
Survival Fight Intensifies
The timing couldn’t be worse. Leicester’s form has collapsed — just one win in their last 12 games — leaving Gary Rowett, appointed as interim boss, with a mountain to climb.
A second successive relegation is now a real possibility for the 2016 champions. With rivals holding games in hand and momentum against them, Leicester no longer control their destiny.
Five matches remain. The margin for error? Gone.
