India continues to witness legal and political debates over religious sites claimed by both Hindu and Muslim communities. Among the most prominent disputes is the Bhojshala Temple-Kamal Maula Mosque Complex in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district, where Hindus regard the site as a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, while Muslims identify it as the Kamal Maula Mosque. Multiple court hearings, surveys and competing worship claims kept the issue in the spotlight.
Earlier in the day, the Madhya Pradesh High Court declared the disputed complex as Bhojshala, a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, and barred the offering of namaz within the premises. Delivering the verdict, the court held that the religious character of the site is that of a Hindu temple associated with Goddess Vagdevi Saraswati and recognised it as a historic centre of Sanskrit learning linked to Raja Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty.
The court further ruled that the structure is a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments Preservation framework, with its protected status dating back to March 18, 1904.
Shahi Jama Masjid Case: In Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, the Shahi Jama Masjid case triggered controversy after petitions alleged that the mosque was built over a demolished Hindu temple. The matter led to court proceedings, archaeological discussions and heightened political rhetoric, with both communities asserting historical rights over the structure.
The dispute originated from a complaint filed by Supreme Court lawyer Vishnu Shankar Jain, who alleged that the mosque stood on the site of the historic Harihar Mandir, which he claimed was demolished by Mughal ruler Babur in 1529. Jain petitioned the civil court, urging the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to take control of the “temple".
Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah Dispute: Another major flashpoint remains the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah Complex. Hindu petitioners claim the mosque stands on the birthplace of Lord Krishna and seek the removal or restoration of temple land, while the Muslim side maintains the mosque’s legal and historical status.
These disputes have reignited a wider national conversation on history, faith, archaeology and the limits of legal intervention in centuries-old religious claims. While supporters argue that courts can help address historical grievances, critics warn that such battles risk deepening communal tensions.
