On the occasion of the foundation day of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan chose to reflect not just on the party’s growth, but also on his own journey within it — from an ordinary worker to the head of the state unit. His message, shared through a written note, carried both personal undertones and a broader political assertion about the party’s internal structure.
Marking the party’s entry into its 47th year since its founding on April 6, 1980, Chavan described the BJP as an organisation deeply rooted in ideology and built on the sustained efforts of its cadre. He framed his own rise as evidence of what he called the party’s internal democracy — a system where a grassroots worker can move up the ranks.
Looking back, Chavan placed the BJP’s origins against the backdrop of India’s political climate decades ago, when, as he noted, socialist and Left-leaning ideologies held sway. He invoked leaders like Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Deendayal Upadhyaya and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, crediting them with shaping an alternative political narrative that he believes continues to guide the party.

In Maharashtra, Chavan traced the BJP’s expansion through the contributions of several state leaders. From Gopinath Munde, who helped the party reach rural and OBC communities, to Nitin Gadkari and Devendra Fadnavis, who played key roles in strengthening both organisation and governance, the emphasis remained on continuity and evolution.
At the same time, his remarks carried a political edge. Addressing criticism that once labelled the BJP as socially exclusive, Chavan pointed to the party’s leadership record in Maharashtra, noting representation from diverse social backgrounds. Without naming opponents, he argued that the party’s growth challenges conventional caste-based narratives.
Beyond history and identity, Chavan underscored the BJP’s current priorities — expanding its organisational network, embracing technology, and ensuring last-mile delivery of government schemes. He linked these efforts to the larger national goal of transforming India into a $5 trillion economy, with Maharashtra positioned as a key contributor.
Yet, beneath the political messaging, the tone remained anchored in the idea of the party as a cadre-driven force. For Chavan, the foundation day was less about celebration and more about reaffirming a belief — that the strength of the BJP lies not just in leadership, but in the collective ambition of its workers.
