French President Emmanuel Macron hosted world leaders on the second day of the G7 Summit in Evian, with an interim peace deal between the United States and Iran and the ongoing war in Ukraine taking centre stage in discussions on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among several world leaders invited to the G7 working session titled ‘Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity’ today. Leaders from Brazil, Egypt, Kenya and South Korea were also invited.
The meeting came after US President Donald Trump announced the completion of a landmark deal aimed at ending hostilities in West Asia. Trump promised that he would release the details of the agreement to the public in a formal setting within the next “couple of days."
‘Frank’ Discussion On Iran Deal
Leaders had a chance to engage in a “frank" and detailed conversation about the US-Iran framework deal to end the 107-day war in the Gulf, CNN reported, citing sources. European leaders raised questions regarding the agreement during a nearly two-hour dinner on Tuesday.
One of the key concerns raised by European officials centred on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, with US officials offering varying timelines and explanations over the past day regarding how quickly normal maritime traffic could resume through the strategically important waterway, which carries 20% of the world’s energy exports.
Ahead of the Summit, US officials said they expected European nations to contribute to efforts to remove mines from the Strait of Hormuz now that hostilities have ended. France and Britain have signalled efforts to reopen the energy corridor, although Trump has downplayed the need for European assistance.
‘Positive’ Signs For Ukraine
The Ukraine conflict also became a crucial part of negotiations, particularly after Trump called on Russia to make a deal to end the four-year war, while hinting at reimposing sanctions on Russian oil shipments. Trump also held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
After he met with Trump, Zelenskyy said the US president was “very positive" about Washington’s ability to help Ukraine with more air defence missiles, a key priority for Kyiv. The G7 leaders also discussed more sanctions on Russia, including the energy sector.
A French diplomat told Reuters that G7 leaders had “very productive" talks on Ukraine and were united in their efforts to add more pressure on Russia.
Meanwhile, Trump also emphasised that the US is now in a position to let Russian oil waivers lapse after reaching an agreement to end the war with Iran. “Soon we’ll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing," he said.
