Guwahati: After hosting more than 100 competitions across sports, literature, music, dance, fine arts and theatre, Gauhati University’s 8-day Varsity Week 2026 came to a close recently, underscoring the university’s focus on holistic education and all-round student growth.The week ended with a sense of renewed momentum, marked by camaraderie, achievement and collective pride. Events ranged from quizzes and debates to athletics and kabaddi, and from creative writing and one-act plays to group dance and solo performances.At the valedictory programme, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta described Varsity Week as a fuller expression of education. “Competitions are not merely about winning or losing.
They build confidence, discipline and leadership. The enthusiasm displayed across fields, including sports, culture and literature, strengthens the University’s academic spirit and community bond,” he said, noting that such opportunities help students approach life with courage and self-belief.A dedicated music competition honouring popular artist late Zubeen Garg saw strong participation and added a poignant note to the festivities.
The celebrations also included a grand Cultural Procession, joined by Assamese singer Dipanwita Deka, presenting the cultural richness of Assam and the Northeast through language, arts, cinema and sports.Among those present at the closing ceremony were Registrar Prof Utpal Sarma; DSW Ranjan Kumar Kakati; Deputy DSW Kuldeep Patgiri; Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Ankur Bharali; singer Mausumi Saharia; actress Chetana Das; and Harold Mohan (Member, Central Executive Committee, ABVP), along with faculty members and students.
