Former defensive end for the New York Jets, Gerry Philbin, passed away at the age of 83, reported Rich Cimini of ESPN on Wednesday. The cause of the death was dementia, as told by the family members of the Super Bowl III Champion.

Gerry Philbin’s former teammate, John Schmitt, shared with Bridget Reilly of the New York Post on Wednesday, “I do remember when we played the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoff game, he had a separated shoulder. They made up a leather harness that was a half-inch thick that was wrapped around his chest, and they had a chain-link fence holding the leather arm piece to the chest piece. You never saw such a barbaric thing. And he(Gerry Philbin) played the whole game against Kansas City.

He was a damn tough player, and I loved the man.”

Gerry Philbin, Super Bowl Champion and AFL Champion, dies at the age of 83 due to dementia

Gerry Philbin had a razor-sharp memory in 2018 when he was interviewed by the New York Jets. However, seven years later, his family informed reporters that he had died from dementia. What did Phiblin say in the interview?Despite being 6-foot-2, Gerry Philbin was considered short. Philbin talked about this with the Jets reporters in 2018. He said, “I got the most out of how hard I worked because I was a little disadvantaged with size and overcame it.

I wanted to be an All-Star. I wanted to win the Super Bowl. And the personal goal of getting elected to the All-Time AFL Team. And then finally, becoming a Ring of Honor recipient with the (New York)Jets.

All those things I cherish a lot.”

Gerry Philbin recollected a 50-year-old memory, too, in that interview. When Philbin was asked about his 1968 Super Bowl III win with the New York Jets, he said, “The impact was so great that finally, the AFL was on par with the NFL.

It really meant so much to the players around the league in the AFL because we were really second-class citizens up until the time the New York Jets won in the Super Bowl. That’s what my biggest thrill was - that and to go home and be No. 1 in New York - is another reason.”

How can dementia lead to death?

Rebecca Joy Stanborough of Healthline writes, Researchers are still trying to understand the causes of dementia. All types originate in specific regions of the brain, killing cells over time and spreading to nearby areas. First, memory, personality, and decision-making are affected, and then, in later stages, it affects the heart rate, which can lead to death.

People with dementia often die from complications like the following:

  • UTIs, HIV, COVID-19
  • Falls leading to fractures or surgeries
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Malnutrition
  • Substance misuse
