A complaint has been filed against two prominent Tollywood actors over their alleged social media remarks during the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal.
Senior advocate of the Calcutta High Court, Joydeep Sen, has lodged a police complaint against actors Parambrata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee, accusing them of making insensitive and provocative comments at a time when large-scale political violence had erupted across the state following the 2021 Assembly election results.
According to the complaint, Sen cited a viral social media exchange dated May 2, 2021—the day election results were declared and reports of widespread post-poll violence began emerging from several districts of West Bengal.
The complaint alleges that Parambrata wrote in Bengali words that roughly translate to, “Let today be World Thrashing Day." In response, Swastika allegedly replied, “Let’s do it," accompanied by two beer emojis.
Sen’s complaint argues that the remarks were made at a highly sensitive moment when political clashes and targeted attacks were taking place across the state.
“In fact, an hour after this tweet, one Abhijit Sarkar of Beliaghata was brutally murdered by Trinamool Congress cadres, in which case the culprits have been sentenced," the complaint reportedly states.
Abhijit Sarkar had become one of the most widely discussed victims of the 2021 post-poll violence cases investigated in the aftermath of the election.
The senior advocate has urged police to convert the complaint into an FIR and initiate legal proceedings against both actors. The complaint reportedly accuses the actors of indirectly encouraging violence through their public remarks at a time of heightened political tension.
The 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal had triggered national outrage, with multiple allegations of murders, assaults, arson, and displacement emerging from different parts of the state after the victory of the All India Trinamool Congress in the assembly elections.
